It is a quantitative study of an institution’s strength at promoting the sharing of scientific and cultural knowledge online.
The Webometrics system embraces some 20,000 institutions worldwide.
At a regional level – particularly in a region where no one country has an innate advantage in English - it makes for a compelling comparator.

Data Sources
The data is collected by the "Webometrics Ranking of World Universities", an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab. Due to the automated nature of the approach, the ranking embraces some 20,000 institutions worldwide – the most extensive comparative evaluation of world universities.
Calculations
The Webometrics Methodology is composed of Visibility (Web contents Impact), Transparency (Top cited researchers), and Excellence (Top cited papers).
- We have eliminated the Excellence (Scholar) component due to its overlap with our Scopus analysis.
- We have scaled the other factors up to compensate. Currently, Transparency is weighted at half of Visibility.
- Together, these indicators form a 5% indicator.
